- The 1887 £2 sovereign, also known as a Double Sovereign, was minted to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee
- It was only the second circulating £2 sovereign ever produced by the Royal Mint, with the first minted in 1823.
- The obverse features a new design of Queen Victoria known as the “Jubilee Head” created by sculptor Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm
- The reverse depicts the classic St. George slaying the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci, used on British sovereigns since 1817
