With Henry VII’s mother Margaret a Beaufort, and the panther appearing on the arms of the Duke of Beaufort, both Henry VII and Henry VIII adopted the beast as an emblem of their lineage. Heraldic panthers are traditionally shown “incensed”, with flames issuing from the mouth and ears, and possess the tail of a lion and the claws of an eagle — here the beast grasps a shield bearing the Seymour Wings, two conjoined wings symbolising peace, freedom and flight. The coin’s reverse design, reimagined by David Lawrence in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, presents that legendary creature against a micro-detail surface animation background for added visual depth and security.
